Sixteen coaches have been booked by Oxfordshire's Trade Unions in preparation for the national TUC demonstration. At the moment it looks like the coaches will be free to anyone who wants to join what is likely to be the biggest protest since 2 million protested against the Iraq war.
Oxfordshire UNISON health branch alone has ordered 10,000 leaflets to explain why people should march. |

The speech Philip Pullman gave at the 320 strong Oxfordshire Anti Cuts Alliance public meeting in defence of libraries has been posted online and in just two days read some 20,000 times, has been tweeted and retweeted, and hailed as a classic piece of oratory.

Last night there was a meeting organised by the Oxfordshire Anti-Cuts Alliance (OACA )specifically about libraries. Conservative-run OCC is planning to close 20 of its 43 branch libraries - or rather to withdraw funding from them and offer them the opportunity to be run by volunteers. Last week I talked on Radio Oxford's Breakfast show with Julie Hayward of the Headington Library support group and Keith Mitchell the OCC Leader about the insult to qualified librarians and users this proposal represents.
Anyone who knows me, knows that I have been a campaigner for libraries for over twenty years so will hardly be surprised that I was there. And it did this old campaigner's heart good to hear the passion of the debate and the excellence of the arguments offered.

Celebrated author Philip Pullman is set to address hundreds of library users and library campaigners in Oxford Town Hall next week. He will be speaking out against plans to close 20 out of 43 of Oxfordshire's libraries alongside Andrew Smith MP and library campaigners.
Mr Pulman has already publicly condemned the closures is now calling on library supporters to resist the cuts. Mr Pulman said "We measure the value of a civilized society by the number of libraries it opens, not the number it closes down. To deprive citizens of access to this most precious thing, a library, is to surrender to a savage and stupid fundamentalism, the worship of the market. We do not need to do this. We should resist it passionately."

BUDGET DAY PROTEST
The Con Dem coalition plan a cuts and austerity programme spread over 4 years. What we’ve seen announced in their emergency budget and spending review represents an opening barrage, more will follow. We have to let them know at every turn we will resist. This is another opportunity to build the national TUC March for the Alternative on March 26.
